Petition #21385820

Abstract

Mary S. Lofton and her eleven-year-old daughter Harriet Ann join Thomas P. Lockwood in requesting that said Lockwood "be appointed Guardian of the estate of your Petitioner the said Harriet Ann Lofton." The petitioners point out that said minor "by the will of her Father the late Samuel Lofton is entitled to a personal estate consisting of" six slaves, valued at $2000, as well as "a sum of money amounting" to about $500. They further maintain that "the said negroes being principally children, by reason of Taxes and other expenses furnish little or no income to your Petitioner who is without other means of support." They therefore pray that said Lockwood be granted permission "to sell at public sale the said negro slaves and to invest the proceeds in some good and safe security."
