Petition #21385821

Abstract

Thomas P. Lockwood, the guardian of Harriet Ann Lofton, seeks to sell his ward's estate, which consists of "six negroes, two adults and four children." Lockwood asserts that "said negroes being field hands your Petitioner is unable to realize but little wages for their services and these wages are materially diminished by the heavy city taxes, badges, and the expenses of the negro children." The petitioner avows that "the estate of the minor is a source of little income, having yielded little or nothing during the last year." He therefore prays that "he may be permitted to sell said negroes & invest the proceeds in some more advantageous security."
