Petition #21385956

Abstract

Susan D. Barentine, the widow of James T. Barentine, requests the court's assistance in recovering a judgment against Lucy Prince for money owed to her late husband. The petitioner insists that, although she recovered said judgment in 1858, Lucy Prince has yet to pay the debt. She charges that Prince, who was abandoned by her husband seven years earlier, has avoided paying the judgment on the grounds that she is a married woman "and that she is not therefore bound by her contracts." Barentine maintains that Prince's late father bequeathed two slaves named Ben and Manda in 1854 to be held for the benefit of the said Prince. The petitioner therefore prays that Lucy Prince and Abner Bristow and Archibald Douglas, her trustees, be compelled "to pay unto your oratrix annually the interest on the said sum of $458.06 and the hire of the said negroes Ben and Manda" until the debt is fully satisfied.
