Petition #21386035

Abstract

The children of the late Catharine Cooper seek to recover a family of slaves. They inform the court that their grandfather, Nathaniel Piggott, conveyed a life interest in a female slave named Katinah in 1812 to his daughter Catharine; upon her death, Katinah would go to Catharine's children. Reporting that their mother died in 1860, the petitioners affirm that Katinah is still alive and that they are entitled to Katinah, her daughter Maria, and Maria's four children. They charge, however, that J. Alexander Russell has absconded with said slaves. The petitioners have called upon Russell to return the slaves, but he refuses to comply, and they believe he has “privately removed, and put out of the way, the said negroes in his possession.” The petitioners ask the court to order Russell to deliver the slaves and to account for their hires. They further request an injunction to prevent Russell from removing the slaves from Darlington District.

Result: Partially granted.
