They inform the court that their mother had a life interest in eighty acres of land and nine slaves.  The petitioners request that a guardian ad litem be appointed to represent the interests of John Hunt and that the partition of the estate among the heirs be decreed.  A subsequent court order reveals that the court denied the partition on the grounds that it could not be achieved \"without injury to the parties;\" instead, the court authorized the sale of said slaves at public auction on 1 December 1861 and the distribution of the proceeds among the heirs.  Included with the petition is a letter in which John Belton O'Neall describes the mobilization of the local militia.  O'Neall notes that the mobilization resulted in a \"panic\" in the community, as \"the countrey would be left intirely at the mercy of the slaves.\"","subjects":[{"subject":"Diseases (mental)"},{"subject":"Civil War, impact of"},{"subject":"Militias\/Patrols"},{"subject":"Insurrections\/Revolts (enslaved)"}]}]}
