Petition #21386312

Abstract

Parker Holland, the committee of Selena A. Holland, requests permission to sell slaves that belong to his sister. He informs the court that, in 1849, he was appointed the "committee" for his sister, who was "found a lunatic." Holland relates that he has managed her property, which includes seven slaves and bank stock bequeathed to her by her late mother. The petitioner complains that "from the embarrassments arising from the now existing war the said negro slaves have ceased to produce an income for the support of the said Selena A. Holland and have in fact become an expense." Moreover, the petitioner recently sold five shares of Selena’s bank stock "in order to defray the expenses of removing the said Selena A. Holland from the City of Charleston when the enemy threatened it." Holland asks the court to sanction his actions, and he further seeks permission to sell these slaves and use the proceeds for the support of his sister.
