Leath claims that the thirty-five-year-old slave "has served him well and faithfully and has earned by his services and good behavior a title to his freedom and has fully paid out in labor, his full value-- and is an honest slave and of good character." He "prays your Worships that Said slave David Lawrence be emancipated and set free, he giving hereby his full assent."
