"The Petition of John Brown a free man of color, emancipated at the third term of this Court would represent to your worships that he has been for a number of years a resident of the County of Shelby-- that he has a family residing in said County with whom he is desirous and anxious to remain-- and whom it is his duty to support-- and that he has many other ties which bind him to the said County-- and which render him desirous to remain in said County-- and he therefore prays the Court that leave be granted him to remain in said County of Shelby, agreeably to the laws now in favor in this State and as in duty bound, your petitioner will ever pray &c."
