Petition #21485302

Abstract

John P. Kennerly and Clarissa Bennett Kennerly propose to sell two slave families in order to discharge certain debts owed by the estate of the late Hutchinson K. Bennett, Clarissa's first husband. As administrator and administratrix of said estate, the petitioners represent that "they have exhausted the personal estate of the intestate, his slaves excepted, in the payment of debts of the intestate due & owed to others." They cite that, at the time of his death, Bennett owned the slave Eliza and her five children and the slave Esther and her two children. The petitioners therefore pray that "it may please your honor to decree the sale of one or more of said slaves to pay said debts and charges."
