Mary E. Claiborne, guardian of her seven minor children, seeks permission to use a portion of the proceeds generated by a sale of land in Arkansas "in the place and lieu of her dower in the same." She informs the court that, at the death of their father, her children became owners of slaves and lands in Tennessee and Arkansas. She has sold that property, which yielded "somewhere about thirty thousand dollars." She expects no income for the year, however, and the debts against them "for maintenance education &c amount to about eighteen hundred dollars." She asks the court to allow her to "use enough of the principal to pay this years debts."
