Petition #21584301

Abstract

Charles Lynch, the owner of three slaves, informs the court that he "casually lost said three slaves out of his possession and the same ... came to the possession of the said defendant by finding" on 1 June 1840. Lynch charges that Hardin has "converted them to his own use" and that he "hath not as yet delivered the said slaves or either of them to said plaintiff although heretofore ... requested so to do." The three slaves, a 25-year-old woman, her seven-year-old son, and an unrelated 16-year-old boy, are worth $2000. Lynch asks the court to summon Hardin and to compel him to compensate him for the value of the slaves "together with all costs of the suit."
