In 1837, Elizabeth Hamilton "casually lost" Westley, her twenty-year-old slave of "blackish complexion." George Teel, "well knowing" that Hamilton owned Westley, came into Westley's possession "by finding" and has detained him ever since. Now that Hamilton has died, Teel refuses to return Westley to Mary Jane Watson, administratrix of Hamilton's estate. Watson and her husband Harrison ask that Teel be ordered to return Westley and to pay them damages for his detention. They also ask for a writ of sequestration to prevent Teel from removing Westley beyond the limits of the court's jurisdiction.
