Abstract

Spruce M. Baird and Jackson Doyle ask that they be appointed executors of the estate of the late Nimrod Doyle in accordance with Doyle's will. According to related documents, the estate included eleven slaves. Doyle's will includes the following explanation for a bequest of a slave named Susy to his daughter Muscogy: "my reason for doing so is that I gave my other children, that is to say Jackson and Winchester Education but gave my said Daughter none." On 20 January 1847, the newly-appointed executors petition for permission to sell a portion of the estate.
