Grafton H. Bayne claims that Hiram Kenley, currently a resident of Kentucky, "did steal and entice away" his slave Samuel on 1 June 1842. Bayne believes that Kenley has detained Samuel "against the will and Consent of your petitioner and against the peace and dignity of the State of Texas." Bayne also maintains that Kenley "has taken and received" Samuel's services since that time, which he claims are worth $20 per month. He asks for compensation in the amount of $1,000 (Samuel's value), as well as damages of $3,000.
