Petition #21677801

Abstract

Many years before, Dicey Hall's grandfather gave her father some land and a slave as a wedding gift. After her father's death, Dicey sues her grandfather to acquire the property. She argues that although no "deed of gift" was executed between her grandfather and her father she should nevertheless inherit the property as an only child. Furthermore, her father worked as an overseer for many years and "actually tended & made for the said John Cropps of Corn, Tobacco, wheat, Oats, flax, Cotton, peas, beans and potatoes, all which the said John Hall hath taken & applied to his own use." Dicey points out that her father was supposed to receive one-fifth of the profits, "a very Considerable amount," but he never did.
