Petition #21680204

Abstract

Elizabeth Broaddus, widow of Edward Broaddus, joins her children in seeking a division of the lands and slaves that belong to Edward's estate. The petitioners inform the court that "two of the Slaves of which the said Edward Broaddus was possessed have, since his death, been condemned one was executed; and the other ordered by the Executive to be transported." The widow seeks a one-third share of the land and slaves and "a child's part of the valuation of the said two condemned slaves to her own use." They ask that the residue be divided "equally between the plaintiffs Thomas Broaddus and James Daniel jun in right of his wife the said Nancy and the Defendant." [The execution of the condemned slave roughly coincides with the Gabriel Prosser slave revolt of 1800.]
