Joseph Abrahams seeks an injunction against "a man of Colour by the name of Peter Haley." He charges that the said Haley came to his house when he was not there and "grossly abused and insulted" his wife and "amongst other terms of opprobriousness had called his said Wife a Damned Liar -- upon which your Orator persued the said Haley, then in view, and upon overtaking him, inflicted Several blows, for the gross and degrading insult offered his Wife, whilst him your Orator was absent." Abrahams recounts that Haley responded by instituting "a suit at Law agt. your Orator for the Assault & Battery thus commited," whereupon Haley "finally obtained a Judgment and Execution agt your Orator for the sum of $31.92 Including Damages & Costs." The petitioner prays that Haley be summoned to answer his charges and that "your Worships may be pleased to award to him an Injon to the said proceedings, to the end that he may have the benefit of a new trial."
