Petition #21681306

Abstract

Stephen Murrell, a carpenter, admits that "he agreed to hire of Dd M Parrish a negro man who was recommended by sd Parrish as an excellent sawyer and to furnish sd. negro man with a new whip saw." Murrell confesses "that sd. negro to the great injury of your Orator turned out not to be capable of [sawing] or of being taught to saw & was in every respect one of the most [indifferent] negroes in the Country." He further charges that "before the end of the year sd. D M Parrish took possession of sd negro & hired him to another person." Acknowledging that he is "an ignorant unlettered man," the petitioner points out that Parrish "instituted a suit vs yr orator for the whole amt of sd. hire," which was sent to arbitration, and that "a judgment had been rendered for the amt. of sd. award." He therefore prays that Parrish "be enjoined from proceedg upon sd. jud. untill the further order and decree of the Court."
