- Henrico County, Virginia. March 9, 1820. - December 4, 1820.
- Court: Chancery
- Salutation: To the Justices of Henrico County
Abstract
Daphne Lawson petitions the court for permission to sue for her freedom. In 1808, she asserts that she paid her previous owner, John Taylor, seventy-five pounds, after which he executed a bill of sale to Robert McCracken. Lawson contends that McCracken agreed to emancipate her upon receipt of ten dollars. The petitioner asserts that she paid McCracken the ten dollars yet he refused “to execute a Deed of Emancipation.” Lawson prays "that she may be permitted to sue in forma pauperis in this Court to establish her right to freedom and that Counsel may be assigned her."
