Petition #21682207

Abstract

William Teas brought suit and received judgment against Parmenas Bryant for the hire of a slave named Phill during the year 1810. According to Bryant, the contract as to the hire of Phil was either for fifty dollars or 1200 pounds of tobacco. Bryant says he delivered the tobacco to Teas in New Market where it was offered for sale. However, "not meeting with a satisfactory offer [Teas] requested it should be shipped to Richmond." The tobacco was sent to the capital city and later sold. Bryant acknowledges that he did not receive a receipt, but claims that he has a witness to verify that Teas received the tobacco. Bryant now petitions the court for an injunction to stay the execution of the judgment.
