Petition #21682302

Abstract

Joel Franklin died in 1807 possessed of "a considerable estate real and personal." His will directed that his slaves "should be worked upon the land for the purpose of raising and supporting" his five daughters and his unborn child. One of his executors, James Franklin, took over the management of the plantation and sold "several of the slaves," including a "girl" for $500 and a "man" for $550. The petitioners and heirs argue that the said James Franklin died "without having rendered an account of the crops" in the estate between the years 1807 and 1812. They ask the court to hold his executor, Thomas Crews, accountable for Franklin's "executorial accounts," including an accounting of the tobacco and wheat crops, and "such other relief as may comport with equity and good conscience."
