Petition #21682406

Abstract

Anthony North Sr. purchased a slave named George belonging to Thomas A. North at an auction in 1824. Soon thereafter he sent George to his former home to get some clothes "with directions to return on Monday," but George never returned. North later learned that George had been detained in jail and held subject to an execution in favor of Stephen Perron against Thomas North. The petitioner informs the court that George "was raised by your orators sister" and that he is unwilling "to part with his said slave for the ordinary price of such slave." He asserts that if George is sold to satisfy the execution "he may be totally deprived of his property by his being carried to foreign parts" where George "may be subject to cruelty & hardships against which no ready remedy at law could guard." He asks that Perron and the sheriff be "enjoined from selling said slave & that they be compelled to restore the said slave to your orator."

Result: Denied; appealed; partially granted; injunction dissolved.
