Petition #21682508

Abstract

To protect her property, including seven slaves, furniture, and silverware, Elizabeth Long required that her future husband, James Oliver, a widower with three children "in very embarrassed circumstances," sign a prenuptial agreement stipulating that her property would be for her "separate use, maintenance & support" in the same manner as if she were a feme sole. Shortly after their marriage, however, James attempted to destroy the contract and subsequently beat and abused her "in the most brutal manner" on numerous occasions. He turned her "out of doors pennyless" and took command of her estate. She asks the court to grant her relief, including an injunction, a restraining order, and alimony. The court decree reveals that Elizabeth Long Oliver died during the suit and the administrator of her estate, Benjamin Sheppard, was awarded control of her slaves and other property in 1832.
