Five days after purchasing three slaves from Elias Bowman, who "warranted the right & title of the said negros," John Springs was served with a writ in the name of Harriet Booth for the recovery of one of the slaves, Jessee. Springs explains that "under the bill of sale," he is entitled to "demand & have from the said Elias S. Bowman the damages which he will have sustained by reason of the said recovery." Unable to institute suit until Booth's suit is decided, Springs asks the court to restrain Bowman, whom he describes as a "transient person," from "removing with his effects out of the said Commonwealth of Virginia until after the determination of the suit brought as aforesaid against your Orator."
