Petition #21683035

Abstract

John Yancey and Margaret Burton, administratrix of the estate of the late John H. Burton, accuse Patrick Burton of "fraudulent and lawless conduct" in appropriating "upwards of eight hundred dollars," the partial proceeds from a slave trading venture they undertook with Burton. The three arranged to send their slaves together to the "western market" accompanied by Margaret Burton's son, Yancey's son, and Patrick Burton's agent, the experienced slave trader, Charles Cobbs. The slaves belonging to Margaret Burton sold for $3,364; those belonging to Yancey for $5,536; and those belonging to Patrick Burton yielded about $6,487. After the sales, Cobbs, to whom the purchase notes were addressed, became ill and died. The petitioners complain that Patrick Burton has refused to accommodate them in "an adjustment of the expences & a division of the proceeds" and that Cobbs's widow has taken a larger share of the money than to which she is entitled.
