Watt and Allen, "paupers and persons of colour and infants under the age of twenty one," contend that Nathaniel Manson detains them in slavery, "under what pretence they know not." They inform the court that their mother Judith was a slave owned by the late Addison Davies and that Davies's will freed their mother when she "attained the age of twenty eight years." Watt and Allen charge that "your petitioners born after Judith had attained the age of 28 years are now entitled to their freedom." The petitioners therefore "pray to be allowed to institute a suit in the form of paupris against the said Nathaniel J Manson for the recovery of their freedom."
