Jacob Carter died in 1829, bequeathing his wife, Mary, his estate during her lifetime. Upon her death, he directed that his property be equally divided among his eleven grandchildren. Mary Carter died in 1832, and now the grandchildren seek a "division and distribution" of the nineteen slaves. Among the slaves was "the old negro woman named Chaney," who was permitted to choose her own master among the heirs. According to the commissioners' report she was worth "eighty one Dollars & 25 cents less than nothing."
