Petition #21683614

Abstract

During the American Revolution, William Hinton served briefly as a soldier but soon returned home and sent his slave Lewis, alias Lewis Hinton, as a substitute. After the war William died, and Lewis was sold to Richard Towill who sold him to Mark Towill. The petitioners charge that, when the Towills discovered that Lewis was entitled to "a large sum of money" and a land bounty for his services, they proceeded to secure the prize. Now, many years later, William's daughter and grandson seek "their equal proportion" of any money the Towills received "from the State of Virginia or from the United States" for the slave's services.

Result: Dismissed.
