Petition #21683711

Abstract

James Bottom represents that his only daughter married Robert Anglin and "continued for many years to live at your Orators house with his family, besides his white family, he had a negro woman with five children living upon him." Bottom claims that Anglin "insinuated himself into the business and concerns of your Orator" and thereby transacted nearly all of the family's business, collecting money, selling the tobacco crops, and managing the slaves. When Anglin indicated he was ready to "settle" a place of his own, Bottom even provided him with two slaves. The petitioner reports that Anglin began to arouse his suspicions whereby he demanded an account of all transactions; this resulted in a distancing in their relationship. Bottom charges that Anglin eventually took away much of his personal property and stole two of his slaves, using the pretense of title to a deed from a dead third party. The petitioner now asks the court to force Anglin to give a "full true and perfect account of all monies received" and to return all other stolen articles. In his answer, Anglin claims that, as the son of a rich man, he acted as Bottom's overseer out of care for the family and that the two slaves he took from Bottom were in fact part of his wife's inheritance from her grandfather. We also learn that Anglin was almost illiterate.
