Petition #21683920

Abstract

Eliza Gallee seeks a divorce from her husband, Joseph Gallee. Eliza recounts that she was but fourteen years old when she married the said Joseph and that "she had at the time no affection for said Gallee," maintaining that she was "persuaded by a Woman by the name of Eliza Kennon with whom she then lived" and who "had complete influence over her." The petitioner confesses that "she was in fact compelled to take a trip ... to North Carolina, with said Kennon & said Joseph Gallee: that she was there married to said Joseph Gallee." Eliza laments "that on the 3d day after their marriage," Joseph "beat her & most cruelly treated her & from that day they parted he having left her & have never lived together since." She asserts that Joseph's "sole object" in their marriage was "to get possession of the $1500 owned by her." Noting that "the said Joseph Gallee is now & has long been a perfect vagabond, given up to intemperance" and that "he lives in open adultery," the petitioner "is advised, that she is entitled by Law to a divorce." She further prays that she be permitted "to hold property seperate from him & in her own right."
