Six slaves ask to sue in forma pauperis for their freedom. They claim that the late "Philip E Vass Emancipated your petitioners, Jacob and Mary by name ... and also such of the slaves of his fathers Estate as should be allotted to him in the division about to be made." Sam, Merriweather, and Patty were assigned to Vass's estate after the division of his father's estate. Isaac Medley, Vass's executor, continues to hold the petitioners in bondage, "expressing doubts" of their claim to freedom. The petitioners pray that they be allowed to sue Isaac Medley "for the recovery of their freedom."
