Petition #21684212

Abstract

Mills E. Lawrence complains that he has not received his share of slaves belonging to the estate of the late John M. Day. He asserts that, for "a valuable consideration," he purchased the right, title, and interest of John A. Turner, grandson of John M. Day, to nine slaves belonging to the estate. He was to receive them following the death of the widow, Mary Ann, who held a life estate in the slaves. However, since the widow's death the slaves have been put in the possession of William L. Rochelle, another grandson of John M. Day. Alleging that Rochelle refuses to give him his share of the slaves, Lawrence prays that the William Rochelle and his three younger siblings, of whom he is the guardian, be made parties to this suit and that the court "will decree proper partition" of the nine slaves.
