Petition #21684417

Abstract

James M. Meredith avers that in 1842 "he qualified as guardian for James Philip Gentry an infant & the child of James Gentry deceased ... The whole of the estate consists of a negroe slave by the name of Jim aged about eight years, & who hires for nothing & has been heretofore chargeable." James Philip Gentry is only ten years old and therefore cannot "be placed out at a trade" and so "has been heretofore dependant on your orator ... for his board, his clothing & his schooling." Meredith avers that he "has nothing with which for the next two years, to maintain & school this destitute child." He believes that Jim would sell for about $180 to $200, which would be enough money to pay for the last two years of Gentry's schooling. Therefore, Meredith prays that the "court would by its order & decree direct the sale of the said negroe boy Jim & the proceeds applied in such manner as may seem just & proper, & that an account of the guardianship of your complainant be also directed."
