- Southampton County, Virginia. cicra November 1845. - circa November 1845.
- Court: Circuit Superior
- Salutation: To the Honl. Richard H. Baker, Judge of the Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery for the County of Southampton
Abstract
In his will, Joseph Clanton, who died in Southampton County some years before, left property and money to six children who now reside in Jefferson County, Ohio. The legal guardian of the children, John W. Watkins, states that the children's bequests are in the hands of John Prince, the executor of Clanton's estate. Watkins asks the court for permission to remove their property to the state of Ohio according to "the provisions of the act of the general assembly of Virginia passed March 5th 1842." In related documents, the Guardian's Bonds identify the children as "coloured."
