John M. Kirksey is the legal guardian to the children of the late Marmaduke B. Grigg. Grigg died possessed of a slave family, whom he left to his children. The slaves are now in Petersburg, Virginia, in the possession of the estate administrator, Alexander Donnan, who has hired them out and collected their hires for the sake of the heirs. Kirksey and the heirs have removed to Brownsville, Tennessee "where 'tis probable they will reside for life" and they now believe it would be in their best interests if the slaves were also moved to Tennessee, where Kirksey feels "they would bring better hires." Kirksey prays that Donnan be ordered to pay the slaves' hires to the heirs and that the slaves be removed to Tennessee.
