Petition #21684730

Abstract

William Cobbs, executor of the estate of his late father, Robert Cobbs, seeks to dispose of "a negro man slave named Harry, belonging to said estate, of unsound mind." The petitioner informs the court that Harry "was then and had been for several years theretofore living with Charles L Cobbs one of the legatees." He notes now, however, that the slave has come into his possession. Cobbs complains that the estate cannot be "brought into account" without "some deposition made of said slave." He prays for a decree to put Harry up for sale to the highest or lowest bidder. A supplemental petition reveals that the court issued an order to sell the slave, but "before the terms of said decree could be complied with, the said deranged negro Harry, departed this life." The petitioner prays the court to compensate Charles Cobbs, "who took care of and maintained the said deranged negro Harry, for a number of years."
