Petition #21684805

Abstract

Robert Gary, guardian of Robert T. Saunders, requests permission to sell one of his ward's slaves. Gary informs the court that his said ward "is the owner of several negroes, but no land, so that this [petitioner] is compelled to hire out the negros to make them profitable to his ward and to raise the means of boarding clothing and educating him." He asserts "that one of the negroes, which this complainant has hired out for several years -- to wit Annis a negro woman -- has become so much in the habit of running away, without any cause whatsoever, and has been so miserably rougish that he finds it difficult to hire her out for anything whatever." Lamenting that "she is utterly unprofitable to his ward in any other way for she has no children," the petitioner prays that "your worships will direct a sale of the said negro and the investment of the proceeds of the sale in another negro so soon as it can be conveniently done."
