Petition #21685007

Abstract

James Alfred Jones and W. L. Watkins, administrators of the late of J. S. Mertens, seek compensation for his estate. Citing that he died in 1845, they point out that "their intestate was interested in a tobacco manufacturing business in the Town of Petersburg under the name of J Sturdivant -- The said Sturdivant and G G Johnson being also interested." They also maintain that prior to his death Mertens had "hired sundry slaves which afterwards went into the possession of the concern of J Sturdivant" and that at his death "these slaves were permitted to continue in the factory on hire." The petitioners assert that they "requested the said Johnson who was security upon the bonds executed for the hires of the said slaves, when the same became due, to pay them, and agreed if he would do so, that they would return him the money from the estate of their intestate in due course of administration." They thus pray that "your Honor will order all such accounts and upon such principles as the facts of the case and rights of the parties may require, and grant unto your complts all proper decrees for any balance ... to which they may be due as administrators."
