Petition #21685107

Abstract

Anna F. Cocke asks to sell a slave and use the proceeds to purchase a house. Before her marriage, she conveyed certain slaves in trust for the benefit of herself, her husband and "the issue of the marriage." Since her husband's death, she has been left to raise four children and has neither money nor land. The petitioner represents "that she is, and has been of the opinion for some time that, the comfort of herself and children and their welfare would be promoted by selling one or several of the slaves and with the proceeds buying a home." Asserting that a number of her slaves "are depreciating in value from bad habits," she asks to sell "one or several of the negroes, who would now command a good price." Although the petitioner "particularly mentions the slave Bob," the court-appointed commissioner sold Susan for $651.75; he also purchased a home for her on Guarantee Street in Petersburg for $1240.
