Petition #21685122

Abstract

Nancy and Martha Hinton seek their share of the estate of their late father, William Hinton. They explain that the said William held "for life a certain tract or parcel of land lying in this county and a negro man slave named Jesse with remainder to his heir or heirs." Noting that their father was dead by 1843, the Hintons report that a commissioner surmised in 1844 "that a sale could not be made unless at a great and ruinous sacrifice and that the interest of the parties would be greatly promoted by suffering the property to remain in their joint possession." The petitioners point out that their three siblings have "since held the said land and received the rents and profits thereof ... and who also held the said slave of whom they likewise received the hires until he was drowned." Asserting "that they both stand greatly in need of their small portions of the value of the said land & slave and of the rents and profits and hires of the same," the petitioners pray that an account be made "with your oratrixes ... and to pay to them their respective interests."
