Petition #21685321

Abstract

Fleet William Cox, former guardian of Joseph P. Robinson, charges that Mary Wright Robinson, the mother of Joseph, conveyed her property to a trustee before her marriage to Porter Robinson, the father of Joseph. He reports that the Robinsons "removed to the City of Washington" after their marriage, taking with them a slave named Fanny. Cox further claims that "the said slave remained in Washington after the death of the said Porter and was sold and the proceeds of sale were deposited" into a Virginia bank. He avers that he withdrew the said proceeds from the bank, "believing the said sum of money to be the assetts of his ward." Cox informs the court that he "has duly relinquished the guardianship of the said Joseph Robinson & Wm N. Jett has been appointed as such in his stead." The petitioner cites that he "was about to turn over the said balance which consists entirely of the proceeds of the said sale of Fanny to the said Jett, when he was averted by a claim of the said Mary Robinson." Noting the "conflicting claims" of Jett and Robinson, Cox prays that "your worships may settle the same & direct your orator in the payment thereof."
