James M. Willcox, administrator of the estate of Robert W. Christian, seeks to settle disputes regarding the division of the estate. Christian died possessed of a considerable estate that included some sixty slaves. He left a widow, Elizabeth Christian, and seven children as heirs. Willcox informs the court that he has found the "estate of his intestate in a most embarrassed condition, harrassed with sundry chancery suits, involving large amounts of money and property." One of suits pending against the estate threatens to leave him with no assets to pay the creditors of the estate. The petitioner prays that the pending suits be consolidated and that a distribution of the land and slaves may be made by "intelligent and discreet commissioners" according to the rights of the parties.
