Petition #21685417

Abstract

Archibald Drew, a slaveholder, seeks a divorce from wife, Lucy Ann. He complains that during the past three months he "was informed by various persons of the infidelity and adultery" of his wife. Of the opinion that Lucy Ann "visited houses of ill fame, known brothels & was on terms of the greatest intimacy with lewd and common women," the petitioner prays that "your Honor will decree him a divorce." In his deposition, Thomas Moody cites that he was "intimately acquainted with the plaintiff ... and was frequently in the habit of visiting his house." Moody recounts that on one such visit "the black girl named Agness who waited on Mrs Drew in a quick an excited manner exclaimed 'Mr Moody dont go in there, dont go in there' but it was too late I looked in and saw the defendant Mrs Drew standing with her back against the wall and her clothes up Cap Lampkins was covering her, his pantaloons being down and almost on the floor."
