John Brooks seeks a divorce from his wife, Eliza Jane. A deposition reveals that Brooks discovered his wife's adultery from a note "brought ... by a negro girl, who lives with Mrs. Davis, who occupied a part of the house occupied by Brooks and his wife, from Mrs. Eliza Jane Brooks addressed to Dr John Crowder."
