Petition #21685512

Abstract

John Brooks seeks a divorce from his wife, Eliza Jane. He confesses that "he found out beyond all question that his wife was certainly unfaithful to him, that she was not only guilty of adultery of the most Shameless kind, but that she visited brothels and received the visits of the most Lewd and dissolute Men and Women." Brooks concludes that "her utter abandonment to vice and debauchery" forced him to abandon her "who had done him such Cruel wrong." The petitioner therefore prays "that your Honor would decree a Divorce ... between your Complainant and his wife." A deposition reveals that Brooks discovered his wife's adultery from a note "brought ... by a negro girl, who lives with Mrs. Davis, who occupied a part of the house occupied by Brooks and his wife, from Mrs. Eliza Jane Brooks addressed to Dr John Crowder."
