Petition #21685523

Abstract

Joseph H. Prince, guardian of Helen D. Reese Turner and Rosa Reese, seeks to have the sale of a slave confirmed. He informs the court that "among the slaves to which [his wards] were entitled were a negro woman named Tempy & two young children, too small to be humanely separated from their mother." He further notes that the widow, Mary Reese, held the said slaves "for life." Prince complains that "Tempy was a woman of bad character, headstrong & ungovernable and lately, was subjected to strong suspicion of being of an effort to poison the family with which she lived which induced the life tenant and your orator to sell her and send her away from this part of the country." The petitioner reports that he did sell Tempy and her children, whereupon he netted $685.09. Explaining that the said Mary Reese has relinquished her rights to the proceeds of the sale, Prince states that he gave "one half of the said purchase money" to Helen's husband, Edward J. Turner, and is holding the other half in his guardian account for Rosa. He therefore prays that the court "will confirm the sale of Tempy & children made by your orator."
