Petition #21685533

Abstract

Francis and Martha Parrish ask permission to sell a slave named Amy, whom they received as their share of the dower slaves assigned to the late Mary W. Graves and in whom "they have only an estate, for the life of the said Martha." They "represent that the said slave is troublesome and of bad character; and there is strong reason to suspect, though not amounting to proof, that she has been guilty of burning a stable on the premises occupied by your petitioners at their residence in the city of Richmond; and they deem it unsafe to keep her in their employment." Believing "that not only their own interest but that of their children and of all persons interested would be promoted by selling her," the petitioners pray that they be allowed to sell Amy and be permitted to invest the proceeds "either in the purchase of another, or in State loan or other safe security, with the privilege to your petitioners to receive the profits & interests during the life of the said Martha."
