Petition #21685716

Abstract

Nathaniel Barksdale "wishes to reclaim his said property," a slave family currently in the possession of William Logan. Barksdale states that "in the year 1844 Armistead Barksdale and Anthony Sydnor being much in debt and desirous of raising money to pay off their debts determined to send to the southern market a large number of their slaves to be sold for that purpose." The petitioner states that he was hired to sell the slaves. He further reports that Sydnor was planning on selling a female slave named Cuba, who was married to Paul, one of the petitioner's slaves. To protect this family from separation, Barksdale asserts that he and Sydnor agreed to trade slaves, whereupon Sally, one of Barksdale's slaves, would be sold instead of Cuba, who would be given to Barksdale upon his return from the south. He points out, however, that while he was gone Sydnor sold Cuba to William Logan. Barksdale avows that Sydnor, based on the agreement they made prior to his trip south, "had no right to convey or sell her, or to permit her to be sold." Noting that Cuba now has children, Barksdale prays the court's "decree will allow the redemption of your orator's said slaves."
