Petition #21685729

Abstract

The heirs of the late Henry Gardner seek compensation for the loss of a trust estate slave named Juba. They inform the court that "the father of their intestate Henry Gardner decd some two years before the death of his son Henry Gardner gave to him a negro boy named Juba as his own in fee simple." They report that Juba "which they charge was held in trust for them by Jesse Gardners estate was at the August Court 1855 of the county court of Southampton condemned to be hung and his sentence commuted to transportation and his value fixed at $800." They further contend that William Murfre, the administrator of Jesse Gardner, "received from the state of Virginia the sum of $800 for Juba who was transported." The petitioners therefore pray that Murfre "pay to your orators the sum of $800 with interest."
