Petition #21685917

Abstract

Polly Cox, wife of Jordan Cox, confesses "that in a few months after their marriage your complainant became the victim of the cruelty illtreatment and neglect of her husband." Despite "mildness and forbearance on her part," Polly laments "that the said Jordan Cox has been so oppressive, cruel and harsh in his conduct to her that she is, when with him, in constant dread of bodily hurt." She further confides that "she has been constrained to leave her home unprotected and unprovided for, with an infant of tender years to find peace and comfort among her friends." Noting that she brought to the marriage "an estate real and personal of considerable value," the petitioner admits that "the said Cox has refused to provide for her in any manner whatsoever." She now prays "that your honor will grant and decree her a divorce from the bed and board of the said Cox and make such provision for her maintenance and support and that of her infant child" and that the court will "require the said Jordan Cox to restore to her enough or all of her property that may be necessary for her maintenance and support in the manner in which she lived previous to their unfortunate marriage."
