Petition #21686006

Abstract

James M. Chavis, "the legal guardian of Mary Davis a coloured minor," requests an order to release "the money legacy of $1500" from the estate of Hugh Davis. The petitioner informs the court "that his ward was a negro slave belonging to the late Hugh Davis ... who by his will ... emancipated the said Mary and bequeathed to her $1500." Noting that he and his ward now reside in Ohio, Chavis believes "that the removal of the money legacy aforesaid to the state of Ohio will not impair the rights or be prejudicial to the interests of his ward or of any other person." He therefore prays that he be authorized to recover from Davis's executors "the money legacy of $1500 with interest from ... November 1854 ... and remove the said money to the state of Ohio." Chavis confides to the court that "his said ward has no other means of support."
